Paris Saint-Germain sporting director, Leonardo, laid out his priorities for the upcoming transfer window, and a new striker wasn’t on the list.
With Les Parisiens not looking to add to the number nine position, all signs point Mauro Icardi’s stay in Paris becoming a permanent one.
Not a lot of information has leaked out as to whether or not PSG would activate the €70 million option-to-buy clause included in the loan from Inter Milan, until now. In a recent interview with Radio Kiss Kiss (via Football Italia), Letterio Pino, who is Icardi’s legal advisor, said that Argentine “has the desire” to remain at PSG.
“In my opinion, Leonardo wants to keep him, and I hope the PSG will do that. Certainly, that’s the idea,” Pino said.
Pino then touches on why Icardi made no appearances over two legs against Borussia Dortmund in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League, which is a reasonable explanation when you consider him being in the Argentines camp.
“He didn’t play in a couple of Champions League games, but that was only because there were 18 other very good players at PSG,” Pino said.
Finally, his legal advisor touched on the potential interest from Napoli, but quickly put out the flames to that rumor.
“President De Laurentiis has been trying to sign him for many years. Right now, out of respect for PSG, Icardi has the desire to stay in Paris,” Pino said.
If a contract doesn’t occur with PSG, then Icardi can revisit Napoli as an option after returning to Inter Milan at the end of the season.
Still, with Napoli nine points out of a Champions League spot, will they really be able to afford Icardi’s wages since he will be looking for a raise from the €800,000 he earns monthly.
