Ready for the most nonsensical transfer rumor of the day? Buckle up, it’s a big one.
According to Le10Sport, Jürgen Klopp called Kylian Mbappé’s father to express Liverpool FC’s interest in signing the Frenchman and to gauge what the Paris Saint-Germain superstar intended to do next summer when he has one year left on his contract.
It’s no secret that Mbappé has flirted with Liverpool in the past. He’s stated that he uses with Liverpool when playing the FIFA video game, “likes” their posts on social media, and recently called them a “machine.”
If the report that Klopp called Mbappé’s father is true, it goes against what he has said publicly, which is that Liverpool cannot afford the 21-year-old FIFA World Cup winner.
Even with the influx of cash from a new deal with Nike, it’s hard to imagine that Liverpool could afford Mbappé this summer or next especially when you consider the financial impact of the coronavirus.
First of all, whether it’s this year or next, Mbappé will go for more than what PSG paid FC Barcelona for Neymar Jr., which was €222 million in 2017. Then, you have to consider the wages that Mbappé would demand. PSG are reportedly prepared to offer Mbappé a contract extension that will pay him around what Neymar makes currently, which is approximately €30 million per year.
Even if Liverpool were to sell Sadio Mané or offer him to PSG in some kind of swap plus cash, it just doesn’t feel like a deal the Premier League leaders would be interested in. They’re not a club that signs mega-stars like Mbappé. They prefer to find good players and develop them into stars (Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Mané) or bring through academy players like Trent Arnold Alexander.
I’m not naive enough to think Mbappé will never leave Paris, but, it definitely won’t happen before next summer and it might not happen until the summer of 2022 with some reports indicating that PSG would rather keep him throughout the duration of his contract than sell him early.
