It’s been reported that FC Barcelona have given up on the possibility of signing Neymar Jr. this summer and that has opened the door for Paris Saint-Germain to lock him up long-term.
According to Sport, Leonardo, PSG’s sporting director, is prepared to offer Neymar a lucrative contract extension worth €38 million per year. Neymar’s current contract ties him to the capital club until 2022 but if he signs the new offer, he would be a PSG player until 2025.
The report also indicated that PSG would be willing to increase Neymar’s bonuses in an attempt to silence the Barcelona transfer rumors once and for all.
Earlier this season, L’Equipe estimated Neymar’s gross monthly salary at €3,060,000, which comes out to be €36.7 million annually.
This news is in line with what most reasonable-thinking people thought leading up to the transfer window. The coronavirus crisis is putting a lot of financial strain on clubs and Barcelona are not immune.
Right now, it’s just not possible for Barcelona to pay PSG’s asking price of €150 million for Neymar and then pay his wages on top of that.
This season, Neymar has been exceptional on the pitch and has really bonded with his teammates. He appears happy and willing to give his all for the club.
I think now is the perfect time for PSG to put a contract in front of Neymar and see if he signs. He may want to wait until the end of the season to see what happens with the UEFA Champions League and if that’s the case, we likely won’t have a decision until late August.
If Neymar does sign though, I’m curious what that would mean for Kylian Mbappé and his contract extension. Would he be willing to stay in Paris until 2025 with his friend or go chase a new adventure at Real Madrid?
With so many unknowns, it makes this season’s Champions League that much more important. PSG may never have a team as talented as the current squad again and it’s time to capitalize on all of that talent.
