Opinion: Cavani to Newcastle Actually Makes Sense

Unless something drastic happens, like a last-minute contract extension, this will be Edinson Cavani’s last season at Paris Saint-Germain.

El Matador nearly left PSG last January when Atlético Madrid pursued him but they simply couldn’t match PSG’s asking price or his wages and the deal fell apart.

This summer though, there’s another club with prospective new owners with very deep pockets and they are interested in signing PSG’s all-time leading scorer.

According to ESPN, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund is close to a deal that would see them take over Newcastle United FC and they would like to announce their arrival on the grand stage with the signing of several notable players with Cavani being one of them.

It’s been reported that Cavani would prefer to stay in Europe after his time in Paris comes to an end and Newcastle would check that box. They could also pay him what he earns currently with the Ligue 1 leaders or close to it.

Newcastle can’t give Cavani Champions League football but like buying a house, you’re never going to get everything you want.

Having spent time at the beginning of the PSG project (arrived in 2013), he would be a valuable player for Newcastle to have as they try and traverse the transfer market and build a team capable of competing in the Premier League and eventually the UEFA Champions League.

I’m not sure the Uruguayan will enjoy the frigid winters of the Northeast of England, but if he can get over the temperature change, the transfer actually makes a lot of sense.

Cavani is a player who even at 33-years-old, still puts forth a maximum effort and is a consummate professional on and off the pitch. It won’t be long before he’s a fan-favorite but there’s a lot of steps that have to be completed before he ends up at St. James’ Park.
