‘Many Clubs’ Interested in Cavani; Atlético Madrid and Barcelona Favored

Paris Saint-Germain’s all-time leading scorer will be departing the club in a few months when his contract expires and where he goes next is one of the great mysteries of the transfer rumor mill.

Since it became clear that PSG would not offer Edinson Cavani an extension, he’s been linked with several clubs, including Boca Juniors, Flamengo, and several other Brazilian clubs.

According to Cavani’s mother, Berta Gomez, the 33-year-old striker prefers to play in Europe over a return to South America.

“Fortunately today, there are many clubs interested in signing Cavani. He still does not know where he will play, he has three months left in Paris,” Gomez told Ovacion Digital (via Metro).

“We have to think carefully. At the moment, he has no intention of returning to Uruguay, he is planning to continue in Europe and would like to go to Spain.”

Last January, Cavani nearly signed for Atlético but they could never match PSG’s asking price. After the deal fell through, Atléti president Enrique Cerezo accused Cavani’s representatives of holding up the deal for personal reasons. Cavani’s agent and half-brother, Wálter Guglielmone, and Gomez both fired back at those allegations claiming that Cavani did everything he could to make the deal go through but it was Atléti’s unwillingness to increase their transfer fee that sunk the deal.

Cavani does want to play for Diego Simeone at Atlético but if that relationship has been ruined, FC Barcelona could potentially be in play. The Catalan club attempted to sign him last January as well with Luis Suárez injured but Cavani rejected the move. If Suárez leaves Barcelona this summer, that could open up a spot for El Matador and he may be more willing to go to the Camp Nou and play alongside Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann.

While Cavani prefers to play in Spain, he could be lured to England to play for Chelsea who also chased him last January. His experience would be invaluable within Frank Lampard’s dressing room and Chelsea could afford his wages.

Cavani still has business to attend to in Paris before he leaves. He has usurped Mauro Icardi in the starting lineup and if the UEFA Champions League resumes, he will have a chance to deliver the club’s first title in history.
