Paris Saint-Germain are nearly set at the midfield position but they need to add a physically imposing player with world-class ability to pair with Marco Verratti (and Marquinhos when he plays centrally) in the starting lineup for next season.
Throughout the 2019-20 campaign, we learned that Idrissa Gueye is inconsistent, Leandro Paredes is more interested in picking fights, and Ander Herrera is injury-prone.
When considering PSG’s midfield options, two names immediately come to mind: Paul Pogba and Sergej Milinković-Savić. However, whether or not PSG can sign those players depends in part on the actions of Manchester United.
Pogba is entering the final year of his contract at Old Trafford and unless he signs an extension, the Red Devils will be looking to get something for the player they paid €105 million for in 2016.
The France international has been linked with a move to Paris in the past and he would be a nice compliment to Verratti. Plus, what midfielder wouldn’t enjoy playing with Kylian Mbappé and Neymar Jr. in front of them?
Manchester United will likely only sell Pogba if they have a replacement lined up and that player is reportedly Lazio’s Sergej Milinković-Savić, according to Foot Mercato.
Milinković-Savić is a PSG target as well, so it will be interesting to see how this transfer saga plays out.
We know Leonardo, PSG’s sporting director, prefers to sign Serie A players so that would lead you to believe that Milinković-Savić is his preferred target. The Serbian doesn’t have the star power of Pogba but with so many personalities already in the French capital, that might be a good thing.
A move to the Premier League might be more enticing to Milinković-Savić, though. If that’s the case, PSG’s consolation prize could be Pogba. I think most fans would be happy with that.
