Mauro Icardi, the striker with the most perfect part in his hair, is nearing the end of his loan with Paris Saint-Germain and a new team has emerged as a potential suitor for one of the top goal poachers in Europe.
After chasing Edinson Cavani throughout the January transfer window, and ultimately failing to sign him, Atlético Madrid could now turn their attention towards Icardi according to Mundo Deportivo.
The report also indicates that Atléti hasn’t completely given up on signing Cavani who, at 33-years-old, would arrive on a free transfer while Icardi would command significantly more especially if PSG triggers the €70 million option-to-buy with the intent of selling him on for a profit.
Atléti isn’t a club that normally splashes the cash but considering their lack of strikers, this may be a time where they’re willing to invest some money into a proven, world-class striker.
However, they may receive a player who doesn’t really want to be there. It’s well known that Icardi and his wife/agent, Wanda Icardi, prefer to be in Italy and who knows the trouble they will cause if they don’t get their way.
This season, Icardi has scored 20 goals through 31 appearances, but most of those goals came during the first half of the season. Since the start of 2020, Cavani has actually replaced him in the starting lineup due to his lack of scoring and potential falling out with the manager, Thomas Tuchel.
If both Icardi and Cavani leave, PSG will be the next team to be looking for a new striker this summer.
