Report: PSG Will Have to Choose Between Mbappé and Neymar This Summer

We’re several months from the summer transfer window opening but the transfer rumors regarding Kylian Mbappé and Neymar Jr. are already heating up.

You would think journalists, and I use that word loosely, would wait until at least Paris Saint-Germain was knocked out of the UEFA Champions League but they just can’t help themselves.

Yesterday, we learned that Neymar is the number one transfer priority for FC Barcelona and today, Sport reports that PSG will have to decide whether they want to keep Neymar or Mbappé with the former Barca man being the one most likely to leave this summer.

The report from the Catalan newspaper cites PSG’s troubles in the Champions League as the primary reason both players would like a change of scenery. It also should be noted that neither player has signed a contract extension that would keep them at the club past 2022.

This situation is what makes next Wednesday’s Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund so important. If PSG wants Mbappé and Neymar to sign an extension, advancing past the Germans is vital and I would suspect that the team would need to reach the semi-finals to make a solid case to both of their superstars that Paris is where they need to be long term.

A fourth straight Round of 16 exit in the Champions League would likely cost manager Thomas Tuchel his job and if Neymar departs, along with Thiago Silva, Edinson Cavani, and Thomas Meunier, whose contracts expire at the end of the season, we could be looking at a total rebuilt this summer.
