When will FC Barcelona get it? You would think after years of trying to negotiate with Paris Saint-Germain that they would learn what the French club will accept and what they won’t.
For some reason, Barcelona treats PSG like they’re Club Deportivo Leganés, or some small club like that, where they can come in and flash their Barca badge and take whatever they want and leave you with scraps. That’s not how PSG operates.
This week, it was reported that Barcelona has made Neymar Jr. their number one summer transfer target. This shouldn’t be a surprise. They tried to get Neymar last summer but failed to present PSG with a suitable offer. Again, they tried to get a world-class player for well below market value because they’re Barcelona and they’re used to getting their way.
Today’s report from Diario AS reveals that Barcelona will include Philippe Coutinho in any major transfer deals this summer, including Neymar. First, though, Coutinho has to come back fro FC Bayern Munich where he is currently on loan and the German club does have an option to buy, which is unlikely given his form this season (nine goals and eight assists in 31 appearances).
Coutinho is a player Barcelona brought in with some of the money PSG paid them for Neymar but it hasn’t worked out very well and that’s why Coutinho is currently playing in the Bundesliga.
If the AS report is true, it’s laughable that Barca believes Leonardo, PSG’s sporting director, would agree to take Coutinho and send Neymar back the other way. PSG may accept a deal for other players on Barcelona’s squad but it’s not likely to be Coutinho especially given Neymar’s form this season.
My advice to Barcelona is if you want Neymar this summer, make a substantial cash offer or ask Leonardo what players he would consider taking in return for Neymar. You may not like what he says but that’s the cost of doing business with a club that isn’t afraid of you bully transfer tactics.
