Due to concerns over the coronavirus, supporters won’t be allowed inside the Parc des Princes for Paris Saint-Germain’s UEFA Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund but there may be another way fans can be part of the most important match of the season.
As reported by L’Equipe, members of Collectif Ultras Paris (CUP), a PSG supporter’s group, will gather outside of the Auteuil end of the stadium to make sure the players can hear their voices singing and chanting.
“If we can ask all the supporters to push the team all around the stadium, that’s what we’re going to do,” Romain Mabille, president of the CUP, said in an interview with Europe 1. “…it is important that the supporters come around the stadium to push the team and that they hear us!”
Given what we’ve seen from the Ultras in previous years in big Champions League matches, Wednesday night’s atmosphere is going to look and sound very strange. The Champions League anthem will echo off of the empty stands while television microphones will pick up the singing from the supporters off in the distance. During the match, we won’t hear the Edinson Cavani song, but instead, we’ll probably hear manager Thomas Tuchel and the players yelling out instructions.
Late on Tuesday, the CUP announced that they would march towards the Parc des Princes prior to kickoff.
Considering the situation, this is a very impressive effort. Hopefully, the players give the fans plenty to celebrate tomorrow night.
