PSG Joins Arsenal and Everton in Pursuit of Ligue 1 Defender

With the Thiago Silva era likely coming to an end in June and Marquinhos playing more as a defensive midfielder, Paris Saint-Germain will be in the market for a center-back this summer.

One name that’s starting to surface is Gabriel Magalhães, who currently plays for Lille OSC, according to Le10Sport. It’s not a sexy name like Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly, who is a name PSG is targeting as the Italian club is looking to cash in. However, if the capital club is looking to spend big on Lazio’s Sergej Milinković-Savić, then they’ll have to look for deals in other areas.

Furthermore, aside from bringing in players from Italy, PSG sporting director, Leonardo, does look for talent within Ligue 1. In his first stint with the Parisiens, the Brazilian signed fan-favorite Blaise Matuidi from AS Saint-Étienne.

Nonetheless, Gabriel is a good option as he’s playing vital minutes for a Lille side who are currently in fourth place and one point outside of a UEFA Champions League qualifying spot. Despite knocking on the doors of European football, the French club puts business first.

For example, even though they qualified for the Champions League, Lille still took the €80 million from Arsenal FC for Nicolas Pépé. According to Transfermarkt, Gabriel is worth around €15 million, but usually, French clubs will try and seek double or even triple the price. We call it the “PSG Tax.”

With Premier League clubs Everton FC and Arsenal reportedly interested in Gabriel, the Brazilian will likely go to the highest bidder this summer, whether it’s PSG or elsewhere.
