Paris Saint-Germain did not make any signings during the recent winter transfer window but Edinson Cavani was heavily linked with a move away from the capital club.
Atlético Madrid negotiated with PSG throughout the entire month of January but a deal never materialized and Cavani returned to the squad to play out the final months of his contract before becoming a free agent this summer.
Atléti wasn’t the only club that was rumored to be interested in PSG’s all-time leading scorer. While the La Liga side was considered the leader to sign Cavani, Manchester United, Inter Miami, and Chelsea FC were also thought to covet the 33-year-old striker. Now, we’re learning that there was another unexpected club that tried to make a move for Cavani.
On a recent Instagram Live broadcast (via Culture PSG), Andrea Radrizzani, the chairman of Leeds United, confirmed that his club wanted to bring Cavani to England.
“Cavani? The president [of PSG] had given me the authorization to verify the interest with the brother of the player [also Cavani’s agent]. However, the negotiation never took off.
Radrizzani also claimed that he tried to sign another PSG superstar who played alongside Cavani at the Parc des Princes in previous years.
“I spoke more concretely with Zlatan [Ibrahimovic] on the other hand…He could have given us a decisive boost, but he decided to go to Milan. He was very honest and transparent with me. Will I try again with him next year? It depends.”
Leeds ultimately settled for former PSG forward Jean-Kevin Augustin, who signed via a loan from RB Leipzig.
This isn’t the first time Leeds and PSG have made headlines. In recent months, it’s been reported that Qatar Sports Investments (the organization that owns PSG) could potentially invest in the EFL Championship club.
Something tells me this won’t be the last time we read about Leeds and PSG potentially doing business together.
