French Football Pundit Believes Icardi Should Start Over Cavani Against Dortmund

With a little more than a week to go before the second leg of Paris Saint-Germain’s UEFA Champions League tie against Borussia Dortmund, manager Thomas Tuchel still needs to figure out his striker situation.

The first leg in Dortmund saw Kylian Mbappé assume the striker role, but it was a decision that resulted in a 2-1 defeat. With goals necessary in order to book a place in the quarter-finals of the tournament, Tuchel needs to decide between Mauro Icardi and Edinson Cavani and figure who will be the lead striker on March 11.

For Canal Football Club pundit, Pierre Ménès, the decision isn’t a difficult one. He believes Tuchel should start Icardi.

After seeing El Matador miss some scoring chances against Dijon FCO last Saturday, the French analyst took to his Pierrot Football Blog (via Le10Sport) to write that the Argentine is the logical choice as the striker against Dortmund.

“Entering the game in place of Cavani, Icardi signaled himself almost immediately by transforming his first opportunity with a cross strike,” Ménès wrote. “Cavani lost points in his duel with Icardi.”

After playing 71 minutes on Saturday, Cavani missed two scoring opportunities; meanwhile, Icardi, who came on to substitute for the Urugyuan, was able to score despite only playing 19 minutes.

With his job likely on the line, Tuchel needs to decide who will be able to capitalize on their scoring chances because there’s no doubt with Erling Haaland, Dortmund will finish theirs.
