Tuchel Admits to Being ‘Worried’ About PSG Striker

Paris Saint-Germain welcomes Olympique Lyonnais to the Parc des Princes on Sunday and manager Thomas Tuchel will be hoping one of his star players has a breakout performance.

At his pre-match press conference, Tuchel was asked about Mauro Icardi and his recent struggles despite scoring a deflected goal last Tuesday against FC Nantes, which was his first Ligue 1 goal of 2020.

“Yes, I am a bit worried,” Tuchel said. “Who knows, maybe the goal against Nantes where everyone thought it was Angel Di Maria’s goal, maybe that is the goal that will give him his confidence back. I really hope that he will find the rhythm and confidence again because he is still important for us.”

This season, Icardi has scored 18 goals in 26 total appearances for PSG across all competitions. His fast start since arriving via a loan from Inter Milan last summer essentially put an end to Edinson Cavani as PSG’s preferred striker.

The Argentine’s current form is a bit concerning considering PSG travels to Germany on February 18 to face Borussia Dortmund in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League.

If Icardi doesn’t improve against Lyon, Dijon FCO next Wednesday, and Amiens SC next Saturday, it’s possible he could be left on the bench with Tuchel preferring an attack force of Kylian Mbappé, Neymar Jr., Angel Di Maria, and Pablo Sarabia.
