Mauro Icardi’s dip in form in 2020 may lead to Paris Saint-Germain passing on their option to buy the striker at the end of the season when his loan expires.
Last summer, the Argentina international joined the French giants on a season-long loan from Inter Milan that came with a €65 million option to buy as reported by The Guardian.
A few months into the season, that fee seemed like a bargain and it was thought that PSG was already negotiating with Icardi’s agent Wanda Nara, who also happens to be his wife. Before the winter break, Icardi scored nine goals in Ligue 1 and another five goals in the UEFA Champions League. There’s no doubt that he made a lot of people who participate in football betting on NetBet very happy with his goals.
However, Icardi has not maintained that form since the start of the calendar year. He’s only scored two Ligue 1 goals in seven appearances this year (one goal was a deflection he knew nothing about) and he was left on the bench against Borussia Dortmund in the Round of 16 of the Champions League.
According to Tuttosport (via Daily Mail), PSG are “unconvinced and will not trigger the €65 million option to make the deal permanent.”
The 27-year-old was sent out on loan from Inter Milan after his falling out with the Italian club that actually got so bad that Icardi refused to play for them at one point. He’s been a model player since arriving in the French capital but according to the report out of Italy, Juventus FC and Real Madrid will be ready to pounce should PSG pass on signing the controversial striker.
The decision to keep Icardi in France isn’t solely up to PSG. Icardi must agree to the deal and according to Wanda Nara, who spoke to Gazzetta dello Sport (via Bleacher Report) about her husband and agent’s future in January, nothing has been decided yet.
“It’s his decision, but nothing’s certain yet. We’ll see. Certainly, me traveling between Paris, Milan, and Rome is easier to say than to do, but I’m able to. He’s doing very well in France, and I’m very happy about it, plus, we’ve met many friends, so we’ll see…”
We do know that Icardi is “not part of the project” at Inter so a return to his parent club right now is off the table. The report from Tuttosport indicates that Wanda Nara is not in favor of a move to Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, which would leave Juventus as the ideal club for Icardi and his family if he leaves PSG.
Hopefully, he can turn things around to close out the season because, at €65 million, signing a player of Icardi’s quality would be an absolute steal.
