PSG Midfielder ‘Delivered an Appalling Performance’ Against Dortmund Claims Pundit

There’s plenty of fallout from Paris Saint-Germain’s 2-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League, but one player who is flying under the radar after a poor performance is Idrissa Gueye.

While most fans and pundits blame Neymar Jr., Kylian Mbappé, and manager Thomas Tuchel, Canal Football Club panelist Pierre Ménès (via Le10Sport) put the spotlight on the Senegalese midfielder.

“Fear is also what has transpired a bit in the PSG game. And the defensive player is the one who missed in the middle. Especially since Gueye delivered an appalling performance.”

Fear could be the right word to describe Gueye’s mentality against Dortmund. The 30-year-old former Everton FC midfielder did look a seem a little shell-shocked Tuesday night. Aside from the opening match of the group stage where he put on an excellent performance against Real Madrid in a 3-0 win, Gueye’s form in the Champions League has dipped with each passing fixture.

Against Dortmund, Gueye had a tough night in the midfield where he only won four of his 10 ground duels. Le Parisien gave him a rating of three, which was tied with Thiago Silva for the lowest of any PSG player.

Furthermore, Ménès mentioned that Marco Verratti’s stellar performance was able to overshadow Gueye’s off night. On March 11, when the second leg will be played at the Parc des Princes, PSG will be without their Italian midfielder due to yellow card accumulation.

If PSG hopes to avoid yet another Round of 16 disappointment, Gueye will need to be more of a factor, especially with Verratti watching from the stands.
