It’s amazing how fast newcomers to FC Barcelona fall in line and immediately start peddling the club’s mission to sign Neymar Jr. at all costs.
Quique Setién was recently appointed manager of Barcelona last month and it hasn’t taken him long to start talking about the Brazilian.
In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, the 61-year-old former manager of Real Betis replied “that’s good!” when told that there have been rumors that Neymar wants to return to the Catalan club.
When pressed if he would like Neymar to return, Setién had this to say:
“I love to watch and have great footballers and if I can watch Neymar every day, just imagine.”
Setién may not get his wish. Neymar is currently experiencing a great run of form at Paris Saint-Germain and hasn’t ruled out signing an extension past 2022 with the Ligue 1 club.
As we learned last summer when Neymar tried to force a transfer back to his former club, Barcelona simply doesn’t have the funds necessary to afford a player of Neymar’s stature. PSG’s asking price was too high and the two clubs could not come to an agreement and Neymar remained in Paris.
Setién could get an up-close look at the 27-year-old, though. Both clubs are battling in the UEFA Champions League and if they advance past the Round of 16, they could potentially draw each other in the quarter-finals or later.
