We knew that today was going to be a pivotal point in the Edinson Cavani transfer saga and we may finally be close to an answer.
For weeks, we’ve known that Cavani wanted to leave Paris Saint-Germain in the January transfer window and that his preferred destination was Atlético Madrid.
The reason the deal has dragged on is because Atléti and PSG were too far apart on the transfer fee, as reported by Marca.
Now, several Spanish publications are reporting that Cavani’s entourage is in Madrid negotiating personal terms and that the mood appears positive over a deal finally being done.

For Cavani’s agent to be negotiating terms, it’s clear Los Colchoneros increased their offer to PSG to an acceptable amount. We’ll have to see what the final number comes out to be but there was a previous report that Atléti was prepared to spend €80 million total on Cavani (transfer fee and wages for two and a half years).
It’s a bit of a bitter-sweet moment for PSG supporters. Cavani is a club legend and the all-time leading scorer (198 goals). It’s unfortunate he won’t get the proper Parc des Princes send-off that he deserves but as he searches for more playing time, leaving now makes the most sense for him at this point in his career.
His departure will hurt PSG because it’s one less experienced striker that manager Thomas Tuchel can depend on. However, given that his contract expires in five months, PSG getting a substantial fee (likely €15 million), means it’s a move that had to be done.
