Report: Atlético Madrid to Make Cavani Bid on Monday; Increase Offer to €15M

We could finally be closing in on an end to the Edinson Cavani transfer saga but unfortunately, it means that Paris Saint-Germain’s all-time leading scorer will not have an opportunity for one last run-out at the Parc des Princes in front of the supporters.

According to a report from Goal, Cavani has agreed to terms with Atlético Madrid, his preferred destination, and that the La Liga side will “submit a final offer” on Monday. The entire deal could be finalized next week, which is in line with what Atléti’s president said about the deal going until the final day of the January transfer window.

Cavani has been left out of the team traveling to Lille OSC for Sunday’s match due to his transfer situation with manager Thomas Tuchel confirming at his pre-match press conference that El Matador is no longer injured and is waiting to hear about where he will be playing the remainder of the season.

“Edi trained with us, but his situation is not clear. It is for this reason that he will not be available for Lille. This situation has been going on for a long time. He was injured, but he is no longer. His situation is not clear either with the other club [Atletico Madrid].”

PSG’s sporting director, Leonardo, confirmed last Sunday that Cavani asked to leave the club in January but that an acceptable offer had not been received. Marca reported that Atléti did make a €10 million bid but that was dismissed as the club is looking for closer to €30 million for the 32-year-old striker.

With time ticking and the transfer window inching to a close, L’Equipe is reporting that Atlético Madrid could up their offer to €15 million. Whether that will be enough to convince Leonardo to part ways with Cavani is yet to be seen.

Ultimately, it’s a bit sad that a club legend like Cavani won’t get to say goodbye to the supporters who sang his name and celebrated his accomplishments. Cavani could simply wait until his contract expires at the end of the season and join Atléti on a free transfer but for some reason, he is desperate for a move now.

If PSG declines the improved offer from Atléti, that could open the door for Chelsea and Manchester United who could use Cavani as both of their strikers recently went down due to injury.

The last few days of the January transfer window should be interesting…
