Atlético Madrid Scrambles to Secure Transfer Deal for Edinson Cavani

If Atlético Madrid wants to sign Edinson Cavani, they’re going to have to make an offer Paris Saint-Germain can’t refuse.

According to reporting from RMC Sport, the Spanish side continues to try and negotiate with Les Parisiens over a deal for their all-time leading scorer. Marca backs up that reporting by naming Atléti CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín as the team executive that is leading the negotiation to try and convince PSG to sell.

Cavani was left off the squad list for PSG’s trip to AS Monaco for a match on Wednesday evening. The club cited “groin discomfort” as the reason but RMC reports that the player’s entourage stated that there is no injury.

His absence will certainly fuel speculation that a transfer could get done during the January transfer window. Up until now, PSG has remained firm on their stance that they will not allow El Matador to leave and the player’s agent has said as much as well.

The 32-year-old Cavani will be out of contract this June and PSG could sell him in January to get something for him instead of losing him on a free transfer.

If Cavani truly wants to leave this month, PSG should look to take advantage of the situation and get as much as possible in return from Atléti or Manchester United who is also rumored to be interested. However, they need to have transfer targets lined up to fill Cavani’s void or sign players that fill an immediate need like midfield or right-back.
