PSG’s First Starting XI of the Decade: Where Are They Now?

Paris Saint-Germain’s first match of the last decade was on January 16, 2010, away at Lille OSC. On that day, PSG lost the Ligue 1 battle three to one with a squad that newer fans would barely recognize.

At that time in PSG’s history, Qatar Sports Investments money hadn’t come in and manager Antoine Kombouaré didn’t have a star-studded squad that Thomas Tuchel benefits from today.

PSG finished in 13th place at the end of the 2009-10 season—behind teams like AS Nancy, Valenciennes FC, and AJ Auxerre—but they did manage to defeat AS Monaco in the Coupe de France final for their eighth title.

A lot has changed since then so we wanted to take a look back at the first PSG starting XI of the decade and find out where those players are now:

Apoula Edima Edel – Goalkeeper

Edel retired in 2017. He left PSG in 2011 on a free transfer to Hapoel Tel Aviv.

Mamadou Sakho – Center-Back

Sakho currently plays for Crystal Palace in the Premier League. He left PSG in 2013 to join Liverpool FC for €19 million according to Transfermarkt.

Sammy Traoré – Center-Back

Traoré retired as a PSG player in 2011.

Sylvain Armand – Left-Back

Armand retired in 2017. He left PSG in 2013 on a free transfer to Stade Rennais.

Ceará – Right-Back

Ceará retired in 2017. He left PSG in 2012 on a free transfer to Cruzeiro.

Jérémy Clément – Midfielder

Clément currently plays for FC Bourgoin Jallieu, a French team in the 5th Division. He left PSG in 2011 to join AS Saint-Étienne for €1.8 million according to Transfermarkt.

Claude Makélélé – Defensive Midfielder

Makélélé retired as a PSG player in 2011. He signed for PSG from Chelsea FC in 2008 on a free transfer.

Mevlüt Erdinç – Midfielder

Erdinç currently plays for Fenerbahçe S.K. in the Turkish Super Lig. He left PSG in 2012 to join Stade Rennais for €6.6 million according to Transfermarkt. He scored PSG’s lone goal against Lille and the first PSG goal of the decade.

Péguy Luyindula – Forward

Luyindula retired in 2015. He left PSG in 2012 when he terminated his contract to join New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer.

Clément Chantôme – Defensive Midfielder

Chantôme retired in 2019. He left PSG in 2015 to join Girondins de Bordeaux for €700K according to Transfermarkt. He last played for Paris-based club Red Star FC.

Christophe Jallet – Right-Back

Jallet, who featured in our PSG team of the decade, currently plays for SC Amiens at age 36. He left PSG in 2014 to join Olympique Lyonnais for 1.5 million according to Transfermarkt.
