PSG Shows No Pity For Lyon; Deny Draxler Loan

Olympique Lyonnais has had a brutal season so far. They currently sit in 8th place in Ligue 1 and following their 1-0 home defeat to Stade Rennais last Sunday, they lost Memphis Depay and Jeff Reine-Adelaide for the rest of the season due to injury.

The injury crisis has led to Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas scrambling to find replacements and according to RMC Sport, he gave PSG a call to inquire about the status of Julian Draxler.

The report states that Aulas is interested in a loan deal in order to be able to sign other players of need in January. This didn’t interest PSG at all but the report does say that the reigning French champions are willing to negotiate for around €20 million.

Lyon, known for their academy and being frugal in the transfer market, is not likely to pay that kind of figure for a player whose contract expires in 2021.

In fact, the report reveals that the German midfielder is happy with manager Thomas Tuchel and his situation in Paris and would be open to signing a contract extension with the capital club.

Draxler is just now getting up to full speed with PSG this season. He had a foot injury that kept him out for two months (Transfermarkt) but he’s beginning to get more minutes under Tuchel.

Against Stade Brestois and Lille OSC in late November, he played the full 90 minutes in both matches and recorded an assist in each match as well.

There’s no denying Draxler’s quality and I believe he has an important role to play in this team over the second half of the season, but he has to remain healthy if he wants to earn a contract extension and not be shipped to another club.
