Kouassi Could Turn Down PSG and Join Bundesliga Leaders Leipzig

Tanguy Kouassi is one of Paris Saint-Germain’s most promising young jewels, but according to a report from Le Parisien, the 17-year-old Frenchman could be on the verge of joining RB Leipzig.

Kouassi has yet to sign a professional contract with PSG and despite a string of appearances recently, most notably in the UEFA Champions League against Galatasaray SK, the 6’2″ defender is thought to prefer the current Bundesliga leaders where he would join former PSG youngster Christopher Nkunku and fellow Frenchmen Nordi Mukiele, Ibrahima Konaté, and Dayot Upamecano.

If Kouassi is to leave, it wouldn’t be until June 2020 when his youth contract with PSG runs out. Manager Thomas Tuchel has some time to convince Kouassi to stay and has already been quoted as saying he “hoped to see him sign a new contract” at PSG. With a congested fixture list in January, Kouassi could see more playing time both at center-back and as a defensive midfielder.

The issue regarding talented youth players at PSG is a complicated one. While it would be great for the club to hold onto these players and develop them, that takes time and when you’re competing for the UEFA Champions League every season, time isn’t something you have. PSG’s squad is so good that it takes a special talent to break into the first team and with impatient youngsters, you can’t blame them for wanting to find playing time elsewhere. In return, PSG is able to cash in and reinvest in proven players like Keylor Navas, Idrissa Gueye, and Ander Herrera.
