How the January Transfer Window Will Impact Mbappé Contract Extension

Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappé is under contract with the club until 2022 but with Real Madrid lining up a mega-bid for the Frenchman this summer, Les Parisiens want to lock him down long-term.

Last month, L’Equipe reported that talks between PSG and Mbappé over an extension had begun and that things appeared to be mostly positive.

There are several players in line looking for a contract extension, Edinson Cavani, Thiago Silva, and Thomas Meunier to name a few, but obviously, Mbappé is the priority.

In fact, Mbappé’s extension could impact PSG’s plans in the January transfer window. According to RMC Sport, PSG sporting director Leonardo is being careful not to spend too much on incoming players so that they have enough cash to work with to offer Mbappé.

The report states that Leonardo is negotiating with Juventus FC on a deal for Emre Can but that he’s open to an exchange in order to save money.

Mbappé will want a significant salary increase that is more comparable to what Neymar Jr. makes and that won’t come cheap. According to SillySeason.com, Mbappé currently earns €360,000 per week while Neymar brings in €700,000 per week.

With Financial Fair Play regulators always looking to nail PSG, Leonardo must make sure he has the cash on hand to keep Mbappé at PSG while still being able to surround him with world-class players. It’s a difficult job but in Leonardo we trust.
