I’m truly at a loss of words after the first 45 minutes.
Paris Saint-Germain was thoroughly outplayed in the first half by Real Madrid who went up 1-0 after 17 minutes via a Karim Benzema goal.
Real Madrid pinned PSG in their own end and pelted Keylor Navas with shot after shot. To be fair, they probably should be up by two or more goals.
That’s not the major talking point though. Right before halftime, Mauro Icardi was brought down in the box by Thibaut Courtois and it was very clearly a penalty. The referee originally awarded PSG a penalty but then VAR got involved.
PENALTY awarded.
Courtois SENT OFF.
VAR intervenes.
Free-kick to REAL MADRID.

The most dramatic VAR reversal so far?
✅PSG awarded a penalty
✅Courtois sent off

The play went from a penalty to PSG, a red card for Courtois, to NO PENALTY AT ALL! Apparently, prior to the foul in the box, Marcelo was fouled by Idrissa Gueye so everything that happened after that was null and void.
The decision left manager Thomas Tuchel with nothing to do but laugh.

With Neymar Jr. on the bench, it will be interesting to see how long Tuchel waits until he brings on the Brazilian needing a goal to get back into the game.
A win for PSG will see them clinch the top spot in Group A of the UEFA Champions League.
