Paris Saint-Germain Draws Second Division Opponent in Coupe de la Ligue

Due to schedule congestion, this will be the last season the Coupe de la Ligue will be played as reported by the BBC.

Paris Saint-Germain has won the competition eight times including five of the last six. Manager Thomas Tuchel has yet to win the tournament since joining PSG (lost in the quarter-finals to EA Guingamp last season) and will want to add the gold trophy to his cabinet before the competition is no more.

Paris Saint-Germain is currently in the quarter-finals of this year’s tournament and was drawn against Ligue 2 side Le Mans FC according to the club’s official website and the tie will be played on December 18.

The reigning French champions will obviously be the favorite to win that tie over Le Mans but winning the tournament outright will be a tricky affair.

Tuchel is dealing with a lot of injuries to his squad and with the UEFA Champions League the priority, he may opt to start fringe players and see how far they can take the club in the tournament. It wouldn’t surprise me to see players like Sergio Rico, Mitchel Bakker, Tanguy Kouassi, Loïc Mbe Soh, and Adil Aouchiche.

It will be a good opportunity for those players to display their abilities in front of the manager and hopefully earn more playing time next season. Obviously, for those players, it will be beneficial to reach the finals as that would be more playing time.

From a fan’s perspective, I want to win the Coupe de la Ligue because of what happened last season. PSG won Ligue 1 but they failed to retain the Coupe de la Ligue and Coupe de France. I want to reach the latter stages of the Champions League but I also want to dominate France and you can’t do that if you don’t win these domestic cup competitions.
