Mauro Icardi Is Still in the Plans for Argentina

Being one of the better strikers in Europe, many would think that Mauro Icardi is a natural choice for Argentina’s national team. However, that’s not the case, and in an article via Diario AScurrent national team manager Lionel Scaloni is leaving the door open for Icardi to return.

After an ugly fallout with Inter Milan, Icardi has reminded the world that he’s still a prolific goalscorer. Through 10 matches with Paris Saint-Germain, the Argentine has nine goals and is averaging nearly a goal per game with a scoring frequency of 76 minutes.

Furthermore, in his short time with PSG, Icardi is slowly rehabilitating his image. Since arriving in Paris, the Argentine has been all business for the club. Thus far, no issues regarding his attitude or his morals have affected the squad.

Despite being a goal-scoring machine, Icardi has seen his name in and out of the national team, whether it’s due a rift between him and Lionel Messi, which the 26-year-old has adamantly has denied according to L’Equipe (via Goal).

The rumors, if one chooses to believe them, surround Icardi’s personal life. Whether that’s led to his exclusion from the national team during significant international tournaments; for example, the 2018 FIFA World Cup and Copa America this past summer is up for debate.

Over the last two tournaments, Argentina has struggled to win any trophies. Perhaps fences can be mended and allow for Icardi to be integrated back into the national team. With the chemistry he has formed with Ángel Di María, probably Scaloni has seen what the duo has done for PSG offensively and wants to bring that over to the Argentinian squad.

Regardless, Icardi’s current form has warranted another look and potentially a spot for the 2019 Copa America.
