LA Galaxy Want to Replace Ibrahimovic with Edinson Cavani

Zlatan Ibrahimovic lit up social media yesterday with his tweet announcing his departure from LA Galaxy after two successful seasons that saw the Big Swede net 53 goals in 58 appearances in Major League Soccer.

LA Galaxy is known for targeting big-name players to raise their profile as well as that of the league. If you remember, David Beckham played in Los Angeles before joining Paris Saint-Germain in 2013.

With Ibrahimovic likely headed back to Europe, the Galaxy has a huge Zlatan-sized hole to fill in their team. According to journalist Gianluca Di Marzio (via Culture PSG), the five-time MLS champions are targeting another Paris Saint-Germain player.

Edinson Cavani is thought to be on the radar for LA Galaxy as well as Inter Milan, Beckham’s expansion team that will begin play in 2020 according to MLS Soccer.

The Uruguayan has been usurped by Mauro Icardi in the starting lineup and has barely featured at all season after returning from injury. Cavani’s contract is up at the end of the season and with no extension in sight, per Diario AS, PSG’s all-time leading scorer could be available on a free transfer next summer.

MLS teams may be too far below his level at this point. Cavani does prefer to stay in Europe but living in North America and having plenty of playing time may intrigue El Matador. We’ll keep an eye on the situation.
