The 1970 Podcast: Le Classique Recap

André Villas-Boas may not think Le Classique is a big deal but we certainly do! Paris Saint-Germain defeated rivals Olympique de Marseille 4-0 at the Parc des Princes on Sunday and Marc and Ed discuss all of the action on the latest 1970 podcast.

In this episode, we talk about what may have been PSG’s most impressive opening 45 minutes of the season. That’s all it took for Mauro Icardi and Kylian Mbappé to each score two goals and put the match completely out of reach for the visitors from the South of France.

There’s a clear gulf in talent between the two players but questions have to be asked of Marseille who are supposed to be the biggest team in France with a rich history and in a match against PSG they’re running out a starting XI that seriously lacks quality. Thankfully, PSG manager Thomas Tuchel gave the rivalry the respect it deserves and put out a very strong lineup that I actually predicted correctly.

We also discuss the possibility that Icardi could become a full-time PSG player after his loan and what he brings to the squad that Edinson Cavani doesn’t and no longer can.

While the goalscorers will get all the headlines, we also give credit to Presnel Kimpembe who combined with Thiago Silva to limit OM to only two shots on target.

We wrap up the episode by looking ahead at the fixture list both in Ligue 1 and the UEFA Champions League. With Neymar Jr. set to return around mid-November, this already dangerous PSG side is about to get a lot more potent.
