Strikers Paris Saint-Germain Should Sign Next Summer

Paris Saint-Germain is loaded when it comes to attacking options but that may not be the case come next season.

Edinson Cavani, PSG’s all-time leading scorer, is out of contract at the end of the season and no extension has been offered yet (and not likely due to his injury history). With several clubs interested in signing the Uruguayan, it’s likely this is Cavani’s last season in the French capital.

Mauro Icardi arrived via loan last summer from Inter Milan and has been sensational for PSG so far this season. The club can activate an option to buy for €70 million per ESPN, which is a bargain for a player of his quality.

However, it can’t be ignored that his wife and agent, Wanda Nara, works in Milan and the Icardi family is having to do a lot of traveling between the two cities. Icardi may love it in Paris but he could be convinced to go back to Serie A. Realizing this, sporting director Leonardo is moving quickly to retain the services of the Argentine past this season according to Diario AS.

Unless Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting is going to be PSG’s long-term striker, the club needs to identify targets to go after next summer. I posed the question on Twitter (@PSGTalk) and here is who PSG supporters said they would like to see at the Parc des Princes:

RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner is the player most desired by PSG fans but it’s unlikely he will join as FC Bayern Munich will likely make a strong push for him next summer. However, Leipzig, who are currently only one point off the lead in the Bundesliga, may feel they can challenge the German giants in the season’s to come and not sell their prized asset to them. PSG will likely be able to afford him and having a German manager in Thomas Tuchel may convince Werner to make a move to Ligue 1.

The two other names that I find interesting are Wilfried Zaha and Harry Kane. I see Zaha as more of a winger and if Kylian Mbappé remains in Paris, I don’t know if that’s a good fit. Tottenham’s Kane though could work. He’s a poacher like Icardi and can play with his back to goal to link up with Mbappé, Neymar Jr., Angel Di Maria, and PSG’s other talented wing players. He won’t come cheap and convincing him to leave the Premier League could be a challenge. However, if Spurs miss out on the UEFA Champions League next season, he could be looking for a new team with that to offer.
