PSG to Feature Version of Vintage Logo For 50th Anniversary Season

Paris Saint-Germain will celebrate its 50th anniversary next season and to mark the occasion, Culture PSG released an exclusive report where they claim the club will bring back a slightly redesigned logo from their past.

The move to honor their history is a smart one for a club that almost always gets it right when it comes to marketing. The third kit for this season echoes back to the 1980s and has been a smash hit with fans as reported by Le Parisien. For the 2020-21 season, the club’s 50th since its founding in 1970, a unique logo from the 1990s will return to a white windbreaker jacket.

The redesigned vintage logo for next season was inspired by one that dates back to the 1992-96 seasons, which was unlike any of PSG’s other designs. WorldSportLogos.com has a great round-up on the history of PSG’s crests and according to them, the radical block-letter logo design from the past was the work of Canal+ who owned the club at the time. The change, unfortunately, was too much for supporters and it only lasted a few years before a return to a classic design was in order.

For next season, Nike has reworked this logo but the influence is obvious. According to the photos released by Culture PSG, the updated version will have the same “PSG” text but will go with a blue, white, and red background instead to mimic the French flag. The “Paris Saint-Germain” text against the black background will also be removed. What remains is a very clean, retro-looking logo on what I’m sure will be a fast-selling jacket.

Fans of this throwback look should start saving their money now as rumors are starting to swirl about a return to the famous Hechter design for next season’s home kit. After a few seasons of bold innovation and creative versions of PSG’s famous home kit, a return to the classic will be a welcomed sight for many.
