Arsène Wenger coached his final match for Arsenal FC on May 6, 2018. Since then, the French tactician, who led the Gunners to three Premier League titles and an unbeaten season, hasn’t landed a new coaching gig but has stated that he misses the intensity of competition, according to beIN Sports.
Currently working as a pundit on television, Wenger told Sport Bild that he expected to be back on the touchline earlier this year but that hasn’t come to fruition. Speaking at a Q&A in London on Thursday and reported by Metro, Ray Parlour, who played for Arsenal from 1992-04, offered up a few potential landing spots for him former manager.
“I would be amazed if Arsène was to come back to the Premier League,” said Parlour. “But he has got a lot more to offer. I always thought he might go back to Japan. That league is improving all the time and he had a really good time there before joining Arsenal.”
The Premier League and Japan might be options, but the former Arsenal midfielder had only one “perfect” coaching job for Wenger.
“For me, the best job for him [Wenger] would be PSG. He would be perfect for that,” said Parlour. “For me, it will be PSG or back to Japan.”
Paris Saint-Germain and Wenger have flirted in the past. Last October, RMC reported that Wenger’s name was being floated as a potential replacement for sporting director Antero Henrique. The move likely didn’t go through because Wenger wants to be a manager, not in the boardroom working on transfers. The decision ultimately worked to PSG’s benefit as Leonardo returned to the club and worked his magic during last summer’s transfer window signing players like Idrissa Gueye, Mauro Icardi, and Ander Herrera.
As always at PSG, the manager’s job depends on their ability to win games in the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League. If Les Parisiens fail to reach the quarter-finals and beyond, it’s very likely that season two will be Tuchel’s last and if Wenger is available, the Frenchman could return to Ligue 1.
