Here We Are Another Day

Here we are another day
Again to whittle and whither away
For time has come around again
To collect the souls and inflict the pain

Here we are again. It’s like an old friend has come to visit. I was quite frankly relieved a bit at his coming. Since holding up this charade of hope and optimism was beginning to weigh heavy on my shoulders. We’ve known the answer to this question for a while, but are usually too blinded by the eternal promise of tomorrow to dare speak the truth.

Paris Saint-Germain, as currently constituted, will never win a UEFA Champions League and will never come close. Ah, that felt good to write. Acceptance is always the first step.

Here we are another day
Again to whittle and whither away
Remember the good times and the bad
Try not to be weary, try not to be sad

Losing a 2-0 lead in the second leg is bad. Doing it at home is worse. Losing it off of three defensive mistakes is catastrophic. Plenty of blame, even a greater abundance of excuses. But, while excuses can build a bridge across the river, it is only temporary and will never last. Thus, you will always need to rebuild the bridge. This was an indictment of something bigger than one game, or one season.

Here we are another day
Again to whittle and whither away
For fate has written what cannot be changed
Not to be altered, not to be re-arraigned

Another year, another champions league failure. They didn’t lose to a better team, but this time to themselves. Self-inflicted wound after self-inflicted wound until in the end the least inflicted wound became the most lethal one. One error too many. Possibly not an error, but in any case, had the same effect. How many times can the same team make the same errors over an extended period of time before one resigns themselves to the inevitable.

Here we are another day
Again to whittle and whither away
If you’ve come for answers I have none
It is what it is, what’s done is done

If you’ve come for analysis I’m not your guy. For I have moved past the simple deconstruction of the game in question. What must be deconstructed is the very idea of PSG itself. How will it exist going forward. Must it continue with this Quixotic quest for a trophy that slips further and further away. Or can this version of PSG die in an effort to be reborn as something else?

Here we are another day
Again to whittle and whither away
Onward and upward I must go
For this death is painfully slow

The next three months will be a steady stream of ideas and calls for what to do next. What tinker we can make here, what adjustment we can make there. PSG on the field is on life support, having lived a full life. This squad in its various forms has given us great memories, and not so great memories. But should it be allowed to give us any more of those memories? I’d say not. Great organizations make difficult decisions. Thanks for the memories but it’s time to move on.

Here we are another day
Again to whittle and whither away
Our time is over, it’s time to die
But is it time to say goodbye

Some players should be kept, and others should leave. That’s not for me to decide. But somebody better decide it and fast. They need a real leader. One who will make the decisions of who to buy and who to sell. They need to figure out if Thomas Tuchel is their coach or not, and not make the same mistake they made with Unai Emery. They need to sell off the past, and cultivate the future. They need to do a lot of things. They may do some of these things, they may do none of these things, they may do different things. But it’s clear that things must be done, if not, we will find ourselves here again on another day, waiting to whittle and whither away.

Here we are another day
Again to whittle and whither away
When you lean your head and close your eyes
In future lives even death may rise.
