PSG Small Talk Podcast: Liverpool No Match For Determined PSG

We’re still buzzing over Paris Saint-Germain’s huge 2-1 victory over Liverpool FC at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night. The reigning French champions came into the match needed a win to keep their UEFA Champions League knockout stage dreams alive and they delivered a performance, unlike anything we’ve seen before.

On this episode of PSG Small Talk, host Marc Damon discusses what is PSG’s biggest European win since the 2015-16 season and how the defense stood strong against a Liverpool attack that searched relentlessly for a late equalizer.

Thiago Silva returned to O Monstro form against the Reds. The Brazilian pocketed the likes of Sadio Mané, Mohamed Salah, and Roberto Firmino. Along with Juan Bernat, Presnel Kimpembe and Thilo Kehrer, the backline only allowed one shot on goal (a dodgy penalty decision right before halftime) and Marquinhos filled in admirably in the defensive midfield role in place of Adrien Rabiot who may or may not have had a blowup with Thomas Tuchel prior to kick off.

Silva’s compatriot, Neymar Jr., was off-the-charts good as Damon describes. He didn’t always attack and looked for opportunities to create for his teammates. He controlled the game and baited Liverpool into fouls late to kill the game off. His goal in the first half proved to be the difference and you can’t say enough about his effort tonight. Even those in the media who detest him had to give him credit for putting in a world-class performance.

There were some concerns on the night for PSG. Edinson Cavani wasn’t great. He got into dangerous positions but the ball never found its way to him. Kylian Mbappé flashed at times but was relatively quiet in the second half before being subbed off in the 85th minute.

If you’re a PSG supporter you have to be happy with this result and effort. If Les Parisiens can play like this on a regular basis, they have a real chance to win the Champions League. They will score goals with Neymar and Mbappé leading the line and if the defense can show up like they did tonight, no team in Europe will want to draw them in the knockout stage.
