As always happens around this time of year, the nominations for the Ballon d’Or award have been released and out of the original list of 30, two players currently play for Paris Saint-Germain. Those two players are Neymar Jr. and Edinson Cavani, who have started both their domestic and UEFA Champions League campaigns very impressively.
When Neymar signed for PSG this summer, the weight of expectation surrounding his world-record transfer meant he would have to hit the ground running, and that he has been able to do so is testament to his temperament. He has excelled not only domestically, but also on the European stage where he has led his team to two convincing wins against Celtic FC and German giants FC Bayern Munich. Neymar has two goals from those games and will look to add more when PSG take on R.S.C. Anderlecht in their next Champions League game of the group stages.
Cavani has also played very well in the Champions League, and he has three goals to his name. Being a regular scorer in the French league does not mean much to some people, but grabbing the headlines on European nights is why Cavani has received the recent praise that he has. With Neymar occupying most of the limelight, Cavani has been allowed to quietly go about his business and so far he is reaping the rewards from that.
One really intriguing name on the Ballon d’Or list away from PSG is that of English striker Harry Kane, who is quickly making a name for himself across Europe. Kane plays for Tottenham, who have struggled at the start of the season, but he has been in great goal scoring form. This is the first time Kane has featured on the list, but after six hat tricks and a total of 43 goals from 37 games for club and country in 2017, he was pretty hard to ignore. If Tottenham are to reduce the 14/1 odds on them to win the Premier League then Kane’s form and fitness will be paramount. The England forward is a unique talent.
The favorite to take home this prestigious award is Cristiano Ronaldo, who has enjoyed yet another successful year with Real Madrid. With Ronaldo and Lionel Messi dominating world football for the past few years, the Ballon d’Or of 2017 may yet again be a battle between the rest for who will finish third. That will bring in Neymar as well as Kane, and will be a very intriguing contest.
The Ballon d’Or remains a prestigious trophy to win for any footballer and PSG will be represented strongly by Neymar and Cavani, although neither are expected to win the trophy. We will find out towards the end of 2017 just who takes home the Ballon d’Or trophy, but right now it looks to be heading the way of Cristiano Ronaldo after another great season.
