Paris Saint-Germain endured a disappointing campaign in 2016-17. Not only did the side fail to do much of note in the UEFA Champions League, but they also lost their stranglehold of the Ligue 1 crown after four years. In what was Unai Emery’s debut season as manager of PSG, the fans must have been left severely disappointed and frustrated.
Emery, though, should not be the one to shoulder the entire blame. After all, there is only so much a manager can do. It was not the former Sevilla boss’s fault that the players suffered what is one of the most embarrassing and shocking defeats in the Champions League when they collapsed against Barcelona at Camp Nou. The players should hold their hands up and admit that they were not at the top of their game last season.
One PSG player who did not play as well as he could have is Angel Di Maria. The 29-year-old is one of the best attacking players in the world, and although the Argentine did well in 2016-17, he could have done better. The former Manchester United winger, who can also operate as an attacking midfielder, scored six goals and provided seven assists in 29 Ligue 1 appearances for PSG last season, while he scored four goals and provided one assist in seven Champions League matches.
During the 2015-16 campaign, meanwhile, Di Maria scored 10 goals and created 98 chances in 29 Ligue 1 appearances, while scoring six goals and creating 35 chances in 17 Champions League outings – a stark difference from his form last year. The 29-year-old’s current contract with PSG runs until June 2019, but perhaps he could be persuaded by Liverpool to make the switch to Anfield in the summer transfer window.
Di Maria failed to make an impact in the Premier League when he was on the books of Manchester United. During the 2014-15 campaign, the former Benfica star scored three goals and created 51 chances in 27 league games for the Red Devils. The Argentine should have been given one more season in England, and Liverpool should be looking to do just that now.
The Reds have already signed a pacy and tricky winger in Mohamed Salah, and they should try to bring in Di Maria this summer. With two top-class wingers in the team, Jurgen Klopp’s side would be a potent force in attack, and it would enhance their chances of winning the Premier League title next season, which are 11/1 according to latest football betting odds.
PSG are one of the richest clubs in the world, and they have no reason whatsoever to sell Di Maria in the summer. After all, losing a player of the Argentine’s quality is only going to make the team weaker. However, every player has his price.
Liverpool are a rich club, and if they are willing to pay £70 million for Naby Keita, then they do have the money to go big on Di Maria. Moreover, the former Real Madrid star could feel that he has unfinished business in England, and perhaps that could convince him to make the switch for Anfield in the summer transfer window.
