PSG Talking Podcast Episode 23: When Your Best Is Not Good Enough

The wait is finally over! It’s been a month since the last PSG Talking episode but the crew is back to discuss all things Paris Saint-Germain. Host Dave (@Meunierist) welcomes Cose (@CoseEspinosa), Guillaume (@Ofthedoor1), and Louis (@Positionista) to break down PSG’s recent results, including the 5-0 win over AS Monaco in the Coupe de France semi-final. The team has been grinding out wins but will it be enough to pass their principality rivals in the table?

There’s also a bit of off the pitch news to analyze. Monchi moving to AS Roma to become their sporting director leaves PSG looking for alternatives heading into what expects to be a busy summer transfer season. Who should Paris target and more importantly, who should be sold?

As always, the best way to contact us is via Twitter at @PSGTalk, and be sure to subscribe and rate the podcast on iTunes and Google Play. Thanks for listening!

  1. Hey guys, interesting insights. On the moves will make in the transfer market I really think it’s imperative to take care of our needs first as a responsible team should. We need a left back to replace Maxwell the next need would be a 6. If Motta stays I’d love to see Thiago Maia come and sit under the Italian for a season so that he could learn the league and his responsibilities for the team. He’s a modern 6 that has it all. Aurier should definitely stay for at least a year, until we REALLY need to sell him. Meunier is great but defensively he’s not elite, and neither Sabaly or Georgen are either as they have a similar profile to Meunier more attack minded than defensive.

We also need to improve our loaning policy that has suffered under Kluivert. Caligari should be loaned out to a bottom table Italian side so he can really learn the game and play. Georgen, somewhere in Ligue 1. Augustine should be sold as his mind is elsewhere and he’s not really been given a chance. Ikone and Edouard also need loan spells in France or abroad.

Dead weight: Lucas has been as good as he will be at PSG and should be moved on. Krychowiak simply isn’t technically good enough to play the 6 for us in the way we play, and how opponents play against us. Jesé isn’t a player whose heart was ever with us and should depart.

Players to reevaluate: HBA should be given a shot to rotate with Fideo on the right as he’s the only player we have that can unlock a a defense’s shape with his dribbling. Lo Celso can play the 10 in a 4-2-3-1 as well as an 8 in a 4-3-3 and looks promising. Guedes is a utility attacker as far as I’m concerned.

Galácticos: from what I’m hearing at least one big signing will be made in attack that can supplement Cavani. I’m hearing Aubamayang or Alexis. I think Alexis is a more pragmatic choice because he can play out wide or as a 9. Either signing will put pressure on the attack to be at their best which is needed to remedy any complacency.

The first step, however is getting a decent sporting director that has experience and knows what he’s doing. I’m hearing a lot about Porto’s former director and his connections and he may not be a bad choice. I believe his name!e is Antero Henrique.

  2. Nice post, and I agree with all of it. There are a few real 6 with decent football IQ and good passing skills and T. Maia is one of them.

Antero Henrique has proven he is a competent director of football and has a good standing relationship with the man in charge of today’s professional football: Jorge Mendes. He would be a good signing.
