Match Preview: High-Flying Lyon Look to Spoil PSG’s Season

Another match and another must-win situation for Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday as they welcome Olympique Lyonnais to the Parc des Princes.

Unai Emery and his squad return to the Parc for the first time since the FC Barcelona debacle and the hosts will want to put on a show for their supporters. It’s also a chance for PSG to reclaim some of the French football spotlight that has been take away recently by AS Monaco and Lyon who are still alive in European competition.

We want to show that we’re in a good spell, we have won 15 of our last 18 games. The aim is to build on our confidence and win back the faith of our fans. The match against Lyon is a good opportunity to show that the team is keeping up its standards.–Unai Emery, PSG.fr

Monaco, who sit three points clear at the top of the Ligue 1 table, travel to Stade Malherbe Caen earlier in the day and Paris will hope UEFA Champions League fatigue sets in so they can make up ground. No matter the result though, PSG need three points but it won’t come easy.

Led by Alexandre Lacazette, Nabil Fekir, and Memphis Depay, Lyon feature a squad full of young talent and could make life difficult for Les Parisiens. Bruno Génésio’s men, who advanced to quarterfinals of the UEFA Europa League last week, sit in fourth place and would love nothing more than to spoil PSG’s season with a win. Les Gones have been in impressive form lately winning 4-0 over Toulouse FC, 4-2 against AS Roma, and a 5-0 thrashing against FC Metz. Given PSG’s shaky defense lately, Lyon could find plenty of space to attack if Emery doesn’t get the tactics right.

PSG will be without several key players against Lyon. Thomas Meunier is out due to injury so hopefully Serge Aurier will be able to get dressed in time to start. Grzegorz Krychowiak, Presnel Kimpembe, and Giovani Lo Celso are the other notable names out of the squad.

Starting XI Prediction

(4-3-3) Trapp; Kurzawa, Silva, Marquinhos, Aurier; Matuidi, Rabiot, Verratti, Draxler, Cavani, Di Maria

Score Prediction

PSG 2-1 Lyon

Lyon are playing too well to not get a goal at the Parc but I think a late Edinson Cavani winner will be the difference.

    1. The lineups typically come out 30 minutes or so before kickoff. This is a prediction and since this is a PSG site I feel more comfortable predicting their lineup than Lyon’s. Thanks for reading.

    1. Season isn’t over. Ligue 1 is still very much up for grabs and this is a must-win match if PSG hope to win another league title.
