Match in Photos: Silva Leads PSG to Coupe de la Ligue Semifinals

Paris Saint-Germain continued their winning ways in 2017 by defeating FC Metz 2-0 on Wednesday at the Parc des Princes to reach the semifinals of the Coupe de la Ligue.

Thiago Silva’s brace (two headers in the first and second half) was the difference in propelling the cup holders past Les Grenats. The Brazilian defender now has four goals in his last three domestic matches leading some to joke that he could put in a shift as Edinson Cavani’s backup.

With 77 percent possession, 18 corner kicks, and 25 total shots, PSG were in complete control from kickoff and I’m surprised the hosts didn’t score more goals considering they were coming off a 7-goal performance against SC Bastia.

Silva may get all the headlines but I was most impressed with Angel Di Maria. The Argentine was under heavy fire from the media for his poor play in the first half of the season and some speculated that he may end up playing in China by the end of January. He’s put all that behind him and has looked much more dangerous in the attack and assisted on both of Silva’s goals against Metz.

Youngsters Christopher Nkunku, Jonathan Ikone, and Presnel Kimpembe all made Unai Emery’s starting lineup and it has to be said that all three were solid when called upon with Nkunku perhaps the most impressive.

Overall, this is a poor Metz team that currently sits in the relegation zone of Ligue 1. Not a whole lot can be gleaned from this performance but the win and playing time for developing players is vital at this point in the season.
