Lack of Signings Due to Ronaldo Interest?

In an interview [in French] with beIN Sports at the end of last season, Paris Saint-Germain manager Laurent Blanc seemed to have PSG’s transfer strategy all panned out. So why the delay in big-name signings?

Now that UEFA’s verdict over their Financial Fair Play status has been resolved, Paris are free to make their moves in the transfer window. So far this summer, PSG have only signed Kevin Trapp from Eintracht Frankfurt, a talented goalkeeper, but not an immediate starter either. Yohan Cabaye has recently left the club, giving Paris more money to spend but credible rumors of a replacement have yet to surface.

There have been other rumors linking PSG to both Angel Di Maria and Kevin De Bruyne as Blanc is in the hunt for a left sided attacker, but nothing concrete. Di Maria’s move to Paris has been those most talked about but he has also been linked with a move to Bayern Munich despite Bayern manager Pep Guardiola claiming that they are not interested. Other reports claim the player was intent on staying at Manchester United to prove himself after just one season so who knows where the Argentine will end up.

According to France Football, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has recently held a meeting with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez in Qatar regarding the possible transfer of Cristiano Ronaldo—though highly unlikely PSG lack of activity in the transfer market suggest that PSG might be holding out on a possible deal for Cristiano Ronaldo.

If the capital club were to somehow manage to convince Perez to sell, it will likely cost the entire transfer budget if not more with Ronaldo reportedly open to a move as the club willing to offer him over 50% raise on his current salary according to beIN Sports reporter, Tancredi Palmeri.

The Ronaldo rumor has been accompanied with reports that Paris would be open to selling Zlatan Ibrahimovic this summer after seemingly resolving the issue last month. Personally, I am not against the idea of bringing Ronaldo to Paris as he’ll be a better replacement for Ibrahimovic on and off the pitch, but definitely not this season as the club is in no position to buy the Real Madrid star with certain FFP restrictions still in place this summer.

PSG need to set their priorities straight and go after more realistic targets as quickly as possible, as squad depth still remains a major concern. What do you think? Should PSG go all out and bring Ronaldo to the Parc des Princes this summer?
