Kaká Explains What Neymar Has to Do to Win the Ballon d’Or

One of the reasons that Neymar Jr. decided to depart from FC Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 was because he wanted to lead a squad to conquer the UEFA Champions League without being in Lionel Messi’s shadow.

When the Brazil international was apart of the Barca squad that won Europe’s top prize in 2015, it was Messi leading the Catalan club and not Neymar. Now with the tournament relocating to Lisbon due to the coronavirus pandemic and becoming a single-game elimination, the 28-year-old sits three games away from adding to his legacy.

PSG’s Round of 16 tie matchup against Borussia Dortmund was the first time in Neymar’s tenure with PSG where he was fit for both ties. As a result, Les Parisiens finally were able to break through to the quarter-finals for the first time since 2016 with the Brazilian leading the way.

In an interview with Globo Esporte, former AC Milan midfielder Kaká believes that if Neymar can run through these next three matches and lead the capital club to its first Champions League trophy, it should seal the Ballon d’Or.

“There is Ney, who is very favorite, yes. I believe Neymar is one of the best players today. The specific fact that he wins a prize will depend on a collective achievement he has,” Kaká. “Let’s put it now, this Champions League final, in Lisbon. Neymar being the protagonist, Paris Saint-Germain champion. Neymar wins the award for best player in the deserved world.”

If Neymar can find that offensive form he had against Dortmund, there’s no doubt that PSG will have a punchers chance to win it all.
