How Paris Saint-Germain Can Save €40 Million in Payroll

Paris Saint-Germain will probably never change the narrative that they are an “oil club” hell-bent on ruining football by overspending on players. The truth is that it couldn’t be further from the truth.

You only have to look at the recent negotiations for Mauro Icardi to see that the Ligue 1 champions are about smart business, not overspending for overrated players.

Even the signings of Kylian Mbappé and Neymar Jr., which amount to north of €400 million, were calculated. Look at all of the commercial sponsors that flocked to the club when those two superstars signed and now, PSG is one of the 10 most valuable clubs in the world.

There’s a time to spend and a time to hold back, though. In a recent report from L’Equipe, they estimate that PSG stands to save nearly €40 million in payroll by not renewing the contracts of Thiago Silva, Edinson Cavani, Thomas Meunier, and Layvin Kurzawa.

Some of those savings have already been spent on Icardi (€12 million per year) but the rest can certainly be used to bring in quality players to not only carry PSG into the 2020-21 season but also convince Mbappé and Neymar that the PSG project is worth sticking around for.
