Leipzig Faces Competition From Barcelona to Sign PSG Defender

Tanguy Kouassi is one of the most promising prospects to come through the Paris Saint-Germain academy in recent years.

Earlier this season, the 17-year-old became the youngest player to feature in a UEFA Champions League match when he started against Galatasaray SK and he also scored the 4,000th goal in club history against Stade de Reims.

Kouassi is a special player with a very high ceiling, but he has yet to sign a professional contract with PSG, which is why two big-name clubs are trying to lure him away from the French capital.

According to Diario AS, RB Leipzig remains interested in the versatile Frenchman as confirmed by their sporting director recently.

“It is clear that he is an interesting player,” Markus Krösche said. “He has already played several games for PSG and has scored. We will see how things evolve.”

Leipzig can offer Kouassi plenty of playing time with Dayot Upamecano expected to leave this summer. Settling in shouldn’t be an issue either with several Frenchmen already in the East German club, including former PSG player Christopher Nkunku.

The other club that has Kouassi on their radar is FC Barcelona, according to the report out of Spain. The Parisian-born player will be flattered by the Catalan club’s interest but a move to the Bundesliga, or remaining at PSG, seems like the more logical progression in his career at this point.

As of last January, Leonardo, PSG’s club president, stated that the club had done everything possible to keep Kouassi and it was up to him to make the decision.

It remains to be seen how the coronavirus crisis will impact the transfer market, but the fact that Kouassi would be available on a free transfer tells me that both of these clubs won’t hesitate to sign him once he hits the market.
